why touch typing?

Imagine that you're sitting at your computer, typing notes, an assignment, an action list, an email, a letter or a report - or even a whole book.

Your mind wanders as you write. Your eyes do too.

You're gazing out the window at the blue sky, perfectly relaxed, still happily typing away as the thoughts come to you.

Your fingers are moving almost as fast as you need to type the words to keep up with your thoughts.

You're not consciously thinking about what your fingers are doing.

It just flows.

After two or three minutes you look at your computer screen again.

Everything you have written is exactly as you intended - including some numeric and symbol characters, and all your paragraphing.

You've made not even one error, even though your fingers were moving so fast and you never once looked at the keyboard.

That's a good feeling.

The ability to touch type fast and accurately is a great time saver, efficiency booster and stress reliever.

And it's not hard to learn, with good training and regular practice.

What about voice recognition?

It's been around for years, but is still far from perfect.

Background noises, changes in voice because of moods and colds, all cause problems.

Then there's the problem of the English language having many words which sound the same or similar yet are spelled differently.

Obvious examples:
  • too, to, two
  • there, their, they're
  • your, you're

Spell checkers can't be relied on to get those things right every time.

And if you get such basics wrong you damage or destroy respect at the reader's end.

Voice recognition won't get commas and other punctuation right every time either.

By the time you read all your text again, and correct all the errors, you may have put in more time than you would have taken to touch type it, and the process will have caused you far more frustration.

Voice recognition will never be perfect - but your typing can be.

Touch typing is the biggest efficiency booster and stress reducer for working with computers.
